WILTON MANORS -- Eric Nadel wants some Wilton Manors residents
to live sheltered lives -- at least those who use the Broward
County transit system.
Nadel, 22, who with his mother, Carol, owns a Hollywood-based
company called the Trendel Group, has offered to install between
10 and 15 bus shelters along Wilton Drive and other major
bus routes in the city.
In exchange for the city`s donation of space, Nadel said his
company will provide maintenance and insurance on the 14-foot-long
aluminum shelters.
But Nadel said he also must sell advertising on the shelters
to recoup the $4,500 it costs to build each shelter.
The proposal has split city officials, who have not decided
whether the benefits of providing a comfortable wait for bus
users outweigh the possibility of the shelters becoming community
eyesores.
Most of the opposition comes from Nadel`s proposal to sell
advertising on the shelters.
``My rationale is our own codes do not allow off-site advertising,``
said City Manager Dale Rieth. ``I`m in favor of bus shelters,
but they should not include advertising.``
City concern has focused on developing and maintaining high
aesthetic standards since that was pointed out as a major
weakness by Darby and Way, the firm conducting a redevelopment
study in the city.
``It seems incongruous that at the same moment we`re attempting
to present a more aesthetically pleasing image in the community
we would be considering allowing advertising -- no matter
what its form -- to be placed on city rights of way,`` Rieth
said.
But council member Marvin Bush said the possibility of providing
a service to residents is the most important issue.
``I`m for it 100 percent because it provides for a number
of people who use public transportation,`` he said.
The Trendel Group has installed the bus shelters in Sunrise,
Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes and Pembroke Park.
In six weeks, Nadel said, he will present his plan for the
bus shelters to the new Community Affairs Advisory Board in
Wilton Manors.
