OAKLAND PARK -- Residents soon will see new bus shelters all
over town.
Installation of 14 new shelters by Trendel Inc. of Hollywood
will start in January, pending final approval by city officials.
``We feel this is an excellent example of private and public
partnership,`` said David Ritz, assistant city manager. ``We
will be able to get people out of the elements and hopefully
this will encourage people to use public transportation.``
The city will receive $6,300 from Trendel each year for allowing
the shelters in the city right of way.
Officials signed a contract with Trendel in August, but city
codes did not permit advertising in the city right of way.
So, officials agreed this week to make an exception and allow
Trendel to place advertising on the inside and outside of
one panel at each shelter.
``I think we have to do something to encourage mass transit
in the city,`` said Mayor H. Keneth Powell. ``We have traffic
problems and we need to do what we can to get people to ride
the bus. And in South Florida, where it rains all the time,
that means providing shelters.``
Not all council members were in favor of the new shelters.
``I don`t think they`re maintained properly,`` said council
member Robert Scallan. ``When I see them in other cities,
the Plexiglas is broken, there is garbage spewed everywhere
and people sleeping in them. I don`t think they`re an asset
to the community and I`d rather not see them in the city.``
But Ritz said the city`s agreement with Trendel was strict
about maintenance of the shelters.
``We realize that bus shelters have a tendency to collect
litter and trash,`` Ritz said. ``So we have made every effort
to put wording in the contract to assure the shelters are
maintained properly.``
Eric Nadel, president of Trendel, said the company recently
a new contract for maintenance. ``We`re confident that they
will maintain the shelters properly.``
