DANIA -- The city is considering a proposal from a company
that wants to build covered and lighted bus shelters.
Under the proposal, the city would receive payment in exchange
for permission to build the shelters, which draw revenue from
advertisers.
Each shelter would feature two advertisments, said Eric Nadel,
president of Hollywood-based Trendel Inc.
City commissioners agreed last week to postpone for at least
a month a decision on whether to give the bus shelters a trial
run. During the last two discussions about the shelters, some
commissioners expressed concern about potential safety hazards
and the city`s liability if someone gets hurt at a shelter.
Also, Mayor John Bertino said he has seen some shelters with
advertising that looked ``tacky and offensive.``
Commissioner C.K. ``Mac`` MacElyea said he thought some of
the proposed locations for the shelters were outside city
limits.
The proposed sites for bus shelters include:
-- The north side of Stirling Road at 29th Avenue.
-- The southwest corner of Bryan and Stirling roads.
-- The northeast corner of Stirling and Bryan roads.
-- The southeast corner of Bryan Road and Southwest First
Street.
